Astro
|
Astro was adopted in the spring of 2003 from the NEW NODAWAY HUMAN SOCIETY.
At the time, I was looking for a tri-colored, short-haired, female Border Collie.
The people at the shelter turned my attention to "Buddy", two-year old male, long-haired, black and white Border Collie.
I must admit, they really wanted me to adopt this dog. Every excuse I gave them for me not to adopt him, they countered
with reasonable arguments why I should adopt him.
After dicussing adopting "Buddy" for over an hour, I finally relented with a promise that I could bring him back if he did not work out.
Adopting this dog was the best thing I ever did. Even finding out that he had heart worms did not deter me from making "Astro"
(his new name) a part of my life.
Thankfully, Astro tolerated the heart worm treatment well and lived a very healthy life
Astro had a lot of personality, goofy at times, and turned out to be a great dog that everyone loved.
Unfortunately, he died in 2010---much too soon. But I enjoyed every moment we spent together.

Dublin
|
In June of 2010, I found Dublin online on the Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter (FOPAS) website. After emailing them,
I found out FOPAS was holding an open adoption on Saturday outside a local business. I also was interested
in a couple other dogs. To make a long story short, Dublin came home with me that day.
That is when I found out just how abused he had been. The first day,the poor little guy would not even move from
the couch. Getting him through doorways was tough. He was afraid to eat when I was in the room,
and would not take food from my hand. But, with a lot of patience and love, he started coming out of his shell.
No longer is he afraid of doorways, etc. He also is experiencing a whole new world at the lake!
I don't know if I can erase those bad memories from the life he lived before getting to the shelter, but
hopefully, those bad memories will be tucked way back in his mind, hardly appearing again.

Cosmo
|
Cosmo was dumped at a local conservation area. Early one morning, my friend Leo was driving around the country roads before going
to work. Going past this area, he noticed two live kittens, plus the body of a dead kitten. Taking a closer look, he notice the
dead kitten's head had been torn off. He was sure that the damage was not done by an animal---a sick human-being had done the ghastly deed.
Luckily, Leo was able to catch Cosmo, but the other kitten ran into the woods. Since I had recently lost my cat, he called me to
see if I wanted him. Of course I did! Leo kept going back to the conservation area looking for the other kitten, which he finally
found and was able to catch. Leo and his family adopted the second kitten, and named her "Cally."

Otis
Pepi
|
Otis and Pepi were both adopted from breeders. Both were runts of the litter. Unfortunately, both dogs
were destined to be "eliminated" by the breeders, as the breeders believed they would not sell. They did not
want to spend any money in keeping them alive until they could find someone to buy the puppies.
Fortunately, both dogs found wonderful homes and are enjoying great lives!
